Yesterday we had
the opportunity to meet Montero, one of a growing number of artists to become
known through YouTube. He only stared to DJ for a few years and has already
reached over 1million views on one of his video “Crackling Fire” This is still
of his most viewed video and one of the best he created.
Why chose to DJ?
I wanted to be a
bank manager. I never thought I will ever end up here or on a stage mixing
playing my own creations. You think I was planning to do this for the rest of
my life? It all started in high school where I was the outsider, the one who
everyone hated or used! I needed something to keep me away from all the pain
they were causing so I begged my mum to get me a mix board and a software to help
me past time. Then some of my friends heard the mixes and begged me to go to
their birthday parties to play my music and it all started from there. I
realised I could make some money so I took the only option I had at the time
and God how grateful I am that I took that risk. Since then I became part of
the popular group but only cuz of my music.
Who are your
influences?
My influencer are
man like Hardwell, Keys N krates, Calvin Harris. These 3 top notch DJ help me
realise that you can take literally any song and experiment with it to create
something new. They prove that you don’t have to be the one who sings the songs
but the one who changes the elements of songs in order to create something
entertaining for the public to enjoy.
So, how much
roughly have you invested in this hobby?
Honestly, more than
I thought I think over a grand. Only the damn software was £700 do u even know
what else I could have bought with that money? Then comes the DJ board which I
had to save up a fortune. I only used to get paid £30 a week by my parents,
which was shit all when u try and save up for something you may thorough away in
a few years.
How much did you
used to charge for your service and how much do you charge now?
I never thought
I’ll ever get paid for my hobby, however I always asked then how much they are
willing to pay me and they always said anywhere between £50 and £100 pounds.
Now is a different
story that was when I was quiet naïve and needed somehow to make a living and
grow, but now I have sponsors and events which pay me for my services. The pay
is different depending which event, time and length. But if you want to hire me
for a wedding or party you can for anywhere between £1000 and £2000 depending
on day, time, event, transport.
What type of music
do you personally listen to?
I listen to
Hardwell, Calvin Harris and Keys N Krates. So basically I listen to house
techno, electro, trap music, house style music. I Love combining the genres of
music I listen to. The mixture helps me understand what effects to use and.
These people also keep me motivated to make better music and actually go out
there and play them without worrying caring what other think.
Your new song is very popular in the east of Europe? What makes
it so good?
I don’t know, it’s probably the drop after the intro, or the
sweet wobble towards the end, or the repeat of the same lyric throughout the
whole mix. The lyric becomes the song and the beat at the same time. I tried to
use as little of layers as possible when making this mix. I loved this project
as it restricted me to only use 5 layers. It was way too difficult at the start
as it kept pissing me off when trying to use more than 1 layer to make the
beat. Oh, well, now I realised that It don’t matter the amount of layers you
use but the experiments you make with and what the outcome is.
Quick tip: never use too many layers as the less layers you
have the more you can do!
DO NEVER FORGET THAT!
What’s your favourite instrument?
My favourite instrument is the piano, I have been playing it
since I was 5 and I never want to stop that. Piano calms me down, it helps when
I’m high and helps me, by making me think I’m elsewhere, somewhere out of this
cruel world where everyone is corrupted with power. It helps me understand how
other feel through the notes I play
What is your next album release date?
The next album 16 January 2015, it’s a mixture of trap music
and house style music where you can get a sneak peak at Amsterdam next week. Don’t
forget to get in touch with me at #Montero on Twitter for my latest album,
songs and free songs to download for u all my fans
